How England-based South and Central American players avoided bans this weekend
The Premier League resumes this weekend after the September international break and, following a week of tense discussions, there will be no enforced absences for players as a result of representing their countries in World Cup qualifiers.
Football’s global governing body FIFA confirmed on Saturday morning that an agreement had been reached to waive the usual five-day suspension for any player not released by their club during this past international break as a sign of “good faith, goodwill and cooperation”.
Eleven players from eight Premier League clubs had been in danger of missing out this weekend after they had been blocked from representing their countries this month, owing to the need for 10 days of COVID-19 quarantine upon their return to the UK.
In the below article, The Athletic assesses the key developments.

Evans and Vestergaard facing late fitness tests, City’s South American players cleared to play
Leicester host Manchester City today and will monitor the fitness of defensive pair Jonny Evans and Jannik Vestergaard, who could return from foot and knee injuries respectively. Winger Ademola Lookman, who has joined the club on loan from RB Leipzig, is expected to make his Foxes debut. Ayoze Perez, who was given a straight red card in Leicester’s 4-1 defeat away at West Ham, remains suspended.
Manchester City could welcome back Kevin de Bruyne after the midfielder recovered from an ankle injury, but Phil Foden is still sidelined with a foot problem.
Premier League clubs that blocked South American players from traveling to World Cup qualifiers amid Covid-19 concerns will be able to play them this weekend after the threat of a five-day ban from FIFA was lifted yesterday. Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Paraguay have agreed to waive their right to trigger a FIFA clause that would have prevented the players from featuring. This means City are free to select their Brazil internationals Ederson and Gabriel Jesus.

Can Newcastle spoil Ronaldo’s return? Wilson missing for Magpies
Cristiano Ronaldo – if you somehow haven’t already heard – is set to make his first appearance in a Manchester United shirt since 2009. The forward, 36, re-signed for the club from Juventus earlier this month.
Newcastle United – against whom Ronaldo scored his first career hat-trick – will be hoping to spoil the occasion. But it will be a tall order. The Magpies have taken just one point from their first three games and head coach Steve Bruce, whose relationship with the fanbase is strained to say the least, is under pressure from the terraces, if not the ownership.
Bruce gave a prickly press conference yesterday, in which he lamented Newcastle’s lack of transfer activity. Only midfielder Joe Willock, who was on loan at Newcastle last season, signed for the club this summer. And Bruce will be without his star striker Callum Wilson at Old Trafford today, after he picked up a thigh injury in the 2-2 draw with Southampton.

Will Arsenal or Norwich get off the mark?
Arsenal host Norwich at the Emirates Stadium today, with both teams winless so far this season and yet to register a point. The Gunners are also yet to score a league goal.
Gabriel, Ben White, Thomas Partey and Eddie Nketiah are fit and available after recovering from injuries. But Emil Smith Rowe is a doubt due to illness and Mohamed Elneny is ruled out because of a hamstring strain. Granit Xhaka, who would have missed the match anyway through suspension, is self-isolating after testing positive for Covid-19.
Gunners manager Mikel Arteta is facing intense scrutiny from the terraces and will be keen to answer his critics this afternoon. Arteta, who was appointed in December 2019, has overseen two eight-placed finishes in the Premier League and lifted the FA Cup during his tenure. But, following a poor start to this season, fans have not shied away from voicing their concerns.
