UEFA clear Sparta Prague after fans booed Rangers’ Glen Kamara during game – The Athletic

UEFA have cleared Sparta Prague after accusations of racist behaviour against Rangers’ Glen Kamara during a Europa League game last month.

An inspector found that there was “insufficient evidence of racism or discriminatory conduct”.

Kamara, who was a victim of racist abuse by Slavia Prague player Ondrej Kudela in March, was targeted during the game despite the Czech club supposedly serving a stadium closure for previous racist abuse.

Sparta fans racially abused Monaco’s Aurelien Tchouameni in August which forced the match to be stopped for several minutes.

UEFA had closed the stadium for the match, but 10,000 kids under 14 years were allowed free entry. Kamara was booed every time he touched the ball.

A UEFA statement read: “In accordance with Article 31(4) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations, a UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector was appointed to conduct a disciplinary investigation regarding potential discriminatory incidents which allegedly occurred during the 2021/22 UEFA Europa League group stage match between AC Sparta Praha and Rangers FC played on 30 September 2021.

“The investigation has now concluded that there was insufficient evidence of racism or discriminatory conduct at the match to warrant the opening of disciplinary proceedings against AC Sparta Praha.”

When questioned after the game whether UEFA should investigate, Rangers manager Steven Gerrard said: “There needs to be more done. Not just myself, everyone across the world is asking for more and bigger and better and more extreme punishments in terms of racism. It needs to be eradicated.

“But until the powers that be do more and treat it more seriously, until that happens, we’re going to be dealing with these questions for a longer time.”
