No Premier League B teams in EFL, 3pm blackout not secure — Rick Parry – The Athletic

EFL chairman Rick Parry has ruled out Premier League B teams competing in the football league pyramid.

With the current EFL TV deal expiring in 2024, Parry is seeking a 25 per cent revenue share from the Premier League and EFL’s TV rights being sold as a package — but says B teams in the EFL are off the table.

“I just don’t see it and, irrespective of my view, it is absolutely not something that our clubs have any enthusiasm for,” said Parry.

“It’s been tried. Greg Dyke tried it, Greg Clarke introduced it at the very start of (Project) Big Picture and I said, ‘that’s non-negotiable, it’s not happening’.

“This isn’t about B teams suddenly parachuting in because you cannot possibly replicate that. It’s just misunderstanding what the pyramid is.”

Parry did not, however, rule out an end to the much-discussed Saturday afternoon blackout in future TV deals.

Matches are not allowed to be televised in the UK between 2.45pm and 5.15pm on Saturdays, a rule that dates back to 1987.

Even if its TV deal is separate from the Premier League’s, Parry acknowledged that all options would be considered.

“I don’t see (an end to the blackout) as being essential. Having said that, I don’t necessarily rule it out.

“We are almost unique in Europe now in having a blackout period. I’m not presuming that it goes, but equally, if we’re looking at streaming, at new technologies and new broadcasters, we will probably have to be open-minded in terms of scheduling.”
