Liverpool: FIFA asked to rule on potential five-day ban for Brazilian Premier League players – The Athletic

FIFA has been asked to rule on whether Premier League sides will be left without their Brazilian players this weekend by European Club Association CEO Charlie Marshall.

Premier League clubs agreed not to release players to Brazil this international break as they would have had to quarantine for 10 days upon return. But FIFA rules state that players would then be ruled out for five days following the international break — which encompasses the coming weekend of Premier League action.

Liverpool would be heavily impacted as they would be without Alisson, Fabinho and Roberto Firmino for the game against Leeds this weekend — who would be without Raphinha.

Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City all kept their Brazilian players back too.

There are suggestions that Brazil, along with three other South American nations, are going to ask FIFA to impose sanctions on the clubs. That said, it is understood they will not ask for Everton to be hit with a punishment.

Marshall said: “This has to be sorted it out within the next 24 hours – Liverpool and the other clubs need to know if they can play their Brazilians or not or whether FIFA is going to enforce the five-day rule for not releasing the players. If FIFA is not going to sanction the clubs then they need to tell them.

“It also needs to be explained how Brazilian players based in England should have been able to avoid quarantine there but not Argentina players. We think FIFA has abused its position and they have to sort it out because we need to know if the five-day rule is going to be imposed.”

Marshall added: “We don’t think there should be sanctions because if a player has to quarantine he is unavailable to immediately play for his club again, so it would be longer than the agreed release period.

“We asked FIFA to extend the exception for players having to be released for international duty but they chose not to.”
