Argentina’s Premier League trio in starting XI despite orders to leave Brazil – The Athletic

Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez, and Tottenham Hotspur’s Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso have been named in Argentina’s starting XI to face Brazil in a World Cup qualifier on Sunday night, despite being advised by Brazil’s health agency to isolate immediately and leave the country.

The Premier League trio line up alongside Paris Saint-Germain’s Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria. It is the same team that defeated Brazil 1-0 in the Copa America final in July. Emiliano Buendia, the fourth Premier League representative, has not been named in the matchday squad but did travel with Martinez, Romero and Lo Celso from England last week.

Following an investigation in which Brazilian health authorities checked the four players’ passports, the health authorities have said that the players had “failed to comply” with the entry regulations for travellers and yet they feature in Lionel Scaloni’s team.

With few exemptions, non-Brazilians who have passed through the United Kingdom, South Africa, Northern Ireland or India in the last 14 days are not allowed to enter Brazil.

Brazil’s health agency, Anvisa, said in a statement that all four allegedly told immigration officers they hadn’t recently been to the United Kingdom or another country that is on Brazil’s red list.

Having said that the information provided by the players was false, Anvisa has advised the players to quarantine, views the situation as “a serious health risk” and has informed the federal police.

“Anvisa considers the situation a serious health risk, and therefore advised the local health authorities to determine the immediate quarantine of players, who are prevented from participating in any activity and must be prevented from remaining in Brazilian territory,” the agency said.

Buendia, Martinez, Romero and Lo Celso decided to join up with their national team despite the Premier League’s attempts to keep hold of their players who were going to be playing in red list countries due to concerns over quarantine.

The current UK government rules state that anyone travelling into the country from a red list nation has to quarantine for 10 days at a government-approved hotel.

A translated statement on Anvisa’s website read: “Due to information that four Argentine players entered Brazil in breach of the country’s sanitary rules, by allegedly declaring false information in an official form of the Brazilian sanitary authority, Anvisa met with representatives of the Ministry of Health and the Coordination of Control of Diseases of the São Paulo State Department of Health this Saturday (4/9).

“After a meeting with the health authorities, it was confirmed, after consulting the passports of the four players involved, that the athletes failed to comply with the rule for the entry of travellers on Brazilian soil, provided for in Interministerial Ordinance No. 655, of 2021 , which provides that foreign travellers who have passed through the United Kingdom, South Africa, Northern Ireland and India in the last 14 days, are prevented from entering Brazil.

“The players in question declared that they have not passed through any of the 4 countries with restrictions in the last 14 days. The travellers arrived in Brazil by flight from Caracas/Venezuela to Guarulhos. However, unofficial news reached Anvisa reporting alleged false statements made by such travelers.

“In view of the news, Anvisa immediately notified the Center for Strategic Information on National Health Surveillance (CIEVS/MS), which coordinates the CIEVS network, responsible for epidemiological investigation with the state of São Paulo and the municipality of Guarulhos, so that the if investigated and tracked.

“Upon confirmation that the information provided by travellers was false, Anvisa clarifies that it has already communicated the fact to the Federal Police, so that measures within the scope of the police authority can be taken immediately.

“There is a notorious non-compliance with the Interministerial Ordinance No. 655/2021 and the Brazilian immigration control rules.”
