UEFA take disciplinary action against FA over Euro 2020 final issues – The Athletic

UEFA has started disciplinary proceedings against the FA after the events that marred last month’s Euro 2020 final between Italy and England at Wembley.

Thousands of people descended on Wembley Stadium more than six hours before the 8pm kick-off time, with Wembley Way packed with fans chanting and letting off flares.

Videos then emerged on social media of people forcing their way into the stadium past stewards, with the Metropolitan Police confirming a “small number” of individuals had breached the stadium security.

Further videos then showed fans fighting stewards and each other, before and during the match. There also appeared to be overcrowding on the concourses and the stadium bowl.

Roughly 65,000 tickets were sold for a reduced-capacity attendance at Wembley, but it is clear that more than that number gained entry to the stadium.

A UEFA statement read: “Following an investigation conducted by a UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector into the events involving supporters which occurred inside and around the stadium during the UEFA EURO 2020 final match between the national teams of Italy and England played on 11 July at Wembley Stadium, London, disciplinary proceedings have been opened against the English Football Association for a potential violation of Article 16(2)(h) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations for a lack of order or discipline by its supporters.”

England lost the final to Italy on penalties after a 1-1 draw following extra-time.

The FA condemned fans for their actions last month. A statement from them said: “We will carry out a full review and investigation into the events that took place at Wembley Stadium before and during the UEFA Euro 2020 Final. This will be done in collaboration with the Police, the Greater London Authority, the Safety Advisory Group and the tournament delivery stakeholders.

“Security and stewarding numbers for the UEFA Euro 2020 Final exceeded the requirements for the match and were greater than any other previous event at Wembley Stadium.

“However, the behaviour of the people who illegally forced their way into the stadium was unacceptable, dangerous and showed total disregard for the safety and security protocols in place.

“No steward or security staff should be subjected to this type of behaviour and we thank them for their support on the night. We also apologise to anyone at the match whose experience was affected by this unprecedented level of public disorder.

“We will continue to work with the relevant authorities to identify and take action against these people where possible.”
