Newcastle: Miguel Almiron advice sought from Premier League amid red list concerns – The Athletic

Newcastle are seeking advice from the Premier League as they look to avoid losing Miguel Almiron due to the need for the player to quarantine after the upcoming international break.

Almiron is expected to represent Paraguay early next month. As it stands, the nation are on the United Kingdom government’s red list and there are no exemptions for elite sports players returning from those countries.

If Almiron plays for Paraguay — who also travel to another red list country in Ecuador — he would be forced to quarantine in a hotel for 10 days after his return to England. The 27-year-old would therefore miss Newcastle’s trip to Manchester United on September 11.

Manager Steve Bruce has now admitted he is worried about the situation.

He said: “The (Premier League) clubs themselves are speaking about it. It affects us.

“I think it would be highly unlikely to send you players to a red country. It is a difficult situation for everyone concerned.

“We are taking advice from the Premier League. You cannot let him (Almiron) go and expect him to stay in a hotel for ten days because he will then miss three games for us on his return.

“So it is a concern. Let’s hope like all of these things that common sense prevails. We are aware of it and we are already in talks with the Premier League and to other Premier League bosses in exactly how we go about it.

“Liverpool have an issue with three or four, but if affects something like 60 players. So let’s hope common sense prevails.”

The European Club Association (ECA), which represents the continent’s elite sides, has said no players will be released for international duty if they would have to quarantine on return.
