RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Spiders men’s basketball team will face Maryland and either Louisville or Mississippi State at the Baha Mar Hoops Bahamas Championship in November, the event announced on Wednesday.
The Spiders will take on the Terrapins from the Big Ten on November 25 at the Baha Mar Convention Center in Nassau in the first meeting between the teams since the 2016 Barclays Center Classic, when Maryland defeated UR in overtime.
Depending on the result of that game, Richmond will face either Louisville of the ACC or Mississippi State of the SEC on November 27. The Spiders only previous meeting against Louisville came in 2005, a 53-45 loss. UR’s 2020-21 season came to an end against Mississippi State in the NIT quarterfinals when the Bulldogs hit a go-ahead three-pointer with 2.0 seconds remaining.
Richmond won its Thanksgiving week tournament in 2020-21, knocking off Morehead State and 10th-ranked Kentucky to win the Bluegrass Showcase at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky. The win over Kentucky was the first of two wins (Vanderbilt) vs power-conference opponents in 2020-21 for the Spiders, who have defeated a power-conference opponent in 14 of Chris Mooney‘s 16 seasons with the program.
Tickets for the event are now on sale at bahamarhoops.com. Tip-off times and television broadcast information will be announced at a later date.
Dates and opponents for the remainder of Richmond’s non-conference schedule are expected to be announced soon.
